Sumire Tonkatsu
About This Spot
Stepping into Sumire Tonkatsu feels like finding a quiet corner where the pace slows just enough to savor simple, honest moments. Nestled near the charming streets of Bukchon Hanok Village, this small Tonkatsu restaurant offers a warm, unpretentious refuge from the bustle of Jongno District. The gentle hum of soft conversation, subtle wooden accents, and the gentle clatter from the iron griddles set a calming rhythm that invites you to settle in, relax, and focus on the meal unfolding before you.
The atmosphere here is quietly intimate—cozy but never cramped—with attentive yet unobtrusive service that makes you feel genuinely welcomed without ceremony. Whether you’re coming in after a day of wandering historic alleys or just seeking a comforting retreat from the cold, Sumire’s mood is that of familiar warmth, an affectionate nod to both tradition and comforting flavors.
When the dishes arrive, it’s clear that each bite is thoughtfully crafted to balance texture and taste. The tonkatsu itself strikes a delicate harmony where the crisp coating yields readily to the tender core of pork beneath, a detail that reveals the care taken in every step from kitchen to table. You might find yourself drawn to moments of surprise in familiar territory—the way melted mozzarella and a hint of cheese stew play alongside classic pork cutlets, or the crispness of tempura shrimp that brings a subtle lightness. Even the cool, refreshing bowl of buckwheat noodles offers a quiet contrast, adding to the meal’s thoughtful rhythms.
Dining here isn’t about rush or spectacle; it’s a steady, peaceful experience that encourages returning to the simple joy of good food in good company. There’s a consistency and honesty in every visit that makes Sumire Tonkatsu feel like a quietly beloved secret the neighborhood holds close—a place to come back to and find a calm moment woven into the everyday.

- Good food, good atmosphere! If you’re craving for some Japanese cuisine (specifically katsu) in South Korea, then Sumire Tonkatsu is the way to go - Nearby Bukchon Hanok Village soooo if you got tired after all the walks & photo ops, you can fill up your tummies here - Breadings did not take up too much of the material composition of the katsu, you can still taste the meat to its core - Love their potato croquettes, def try them as appetizers before munching on your katsu - Def will go back again!

been going to this place for the past 2 years and no matter the weather, it’s always the perfect meal. it’s a cute small restaurant with a very calming vibe and the quality of food has been very consistent. it’s my “must-go-to” everytime i come to seoul. The pics are from all the separate times i’ve been.

Great food, great staff and a nice little place. You order the food through a little screen which has English translation. The portion size was much larger than I expected based on the menu images. I had pork tenderloin, it was soo good.

Buckwheat noodles are fantastic, I liked that the soup came with crushed ice to make it cold for longer. Pork cutlet is very tender yet crispy. Atmosphere was very cozy on a cold winter day.

While located on a main street, Sumire Tonkatsu is a quiet restaurant that offers a small yet delicious and amazing set of dishes. From pork to chicken to fish. There are plenty of tables available that mainly seat 4 people. You order via the screen at the table and service is prompt and friendly. Meals are presented on a tray that conveniently fit perfectly on the table when all 4 people have ordered. All dishes selected on this occasion were wonderful, tasty, well presented and cooked perfectly. Nothing disappointed and Sumire Tonkatsu exceeded expectations. Worth a visit to satiate your appetite.
